Rafa: 'Remember Me As A Good Person, More Than A Good Player'

Rafael Nadal was presented with the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award in an on-court ceremony on Wednesday in Perth, after he helped send Team Spain through to the Final Eight at the ATP Cup.

The Spanish superstar, who was honoured with the 2019 ATP Tour No. 1 trophy during the Nitto ATP Finals in November 2019, was voted by fellow players for the sportsmanship award, recognising his fair play, professionalism and integrity on and off the court. He receives the trophy for a second straight year and third time overall (also 2010 and 2018).

“It means a lot, of course winning matches and winning titles is important, but as I’ve said all my career, when the press sometimes ask me how I’d like to be remembered, I’d like to be remembered as a good person, more than a good tennis player,” said Nadal.

“I’ve worked hard all my tennis career to be under good self-control, with the right attitude every single point and fighting to the end, and also respect every single opponent. Thank you for all my colleagues on the tour.”

Roger Federer, Diego Schwartzman and Dominic Thiem were also nominated in this category in the 2019 ATP Awards.
