Medjedovic Books Jeddah SF Place, Qualifies Van Assche

Hamad Medjedovic put himself in a commanding position in the Red Group by winning his first two matches at the Next Gen ATP Finals presented by NEOM. On Thursday, he completed a perfect 3-0 group campaign to soar into the semi-finals in Jeddah.

The Serbian's 3-4(6), 4-2, 4-3(5), 4-2 victory against Abdullah Shelbayh earned him a first-place finish in the Red Group and also qualified Luca Van Assche at Shelbayh's expense. Entering the match, Medjedovic needed to win at least a set to advance to the semis, while Arab hope Shelbayh needed a victory in three or four sets.

“It was a great match. I played really good after the first set,” said Medjedovic in his on-court interview. “He’s a good friend of mine, he’s a very good player and obviously the crowd here loves him and I respect that. It was a pleasure to play in front of [the crowd].”

The semi-final stage is now set in Jeddah: As winner of the Red Group, Medjedovic will face Dominic Stricker on Friday. Van Assche, the second-place finisher in the Red Group, will meet Green Group winner Arthur Fils.

“I’ve known Dominic for a long time,” said Medjedovic. “He’s a great player and a great guy obviously. I think it’s going to be a great match and I’m happy to be in the semis.”

Medjedovic will hope to continue his stellar serving in the knockout rounds. He hit 18 aces on Thursday against Shelbayh and won 88 per cent of his first-serve points, saving all three break points against him. Across his three group-stage matches, he fired a tournament-leading 45 aces and was broken just twice.

"After the first match I started feeling really good on the court," added the Serbian, who said he quickly adapted to the new rules at the Next Gen ATP Finals. "I think each match I'm playing better and better."

Van Assche Keeps SF Hopes Alive With Marathon Michelsen Win

Luca Van Assche kept alive his semi-final hopes at the Next Gen ATP Finals presented by NEOM with a marathon five-set win against Alex Michelsen on Thursday night. The second-seeded Frenchman earned a 4-3(0), 3-4(4), 4-3(4), 4-1, 4-3(6) victory to move into first place in the Red Group after two hours, 36 minutes — the second-longest match in the event's history.

"It was a very tough match," said the 19-year-old. "It was very difficult. There was four tie-breaks in the match, so it was really close. I'm very happy to win today... I hope that the next result in the next match will qualify me."

Following the win, there is only one scenario in which Van Assche will not advance to the Jeddah semi-finals: if Abdullah Shelbayh beats Hamad Medjedovic in exactly four sets in the evening's final match. In that case, Shelbayh would win the group and Medjedovic would finish second.

Van Assche and Michelsen dominated on serve in the first three sets, with both saving all five break points they faced across that period. The first breaks of the match came in the fourth set, when there were three in a row. Van Assche earned two of them by dragging Michelsen into longer rallies on return, with the American unable to break down the agile Frenchman's defenses.

The opponents would again trade breaks in consecutive games in the final set, with Van Assche fashioning an opportunity to serve for the match before Michelsen answered to force a tie-break. The Frenchman built a 3/0 lead with steady play and never trailed in the decisive tiebreak, though he had to hold his nerve late after Michelsen saved two match points to level at 6/6.

"He was playing very well the whole match," Van Assche said of his opponent. "It was really, really close. Not a lot of breaks and it was difficult for me today but I am happy."

[ATP AWARDS]

The opponents combined for 61 winners in the match (31 for Michelsen), with the American's 38 net approaches often forcing the action. He won 24 of those net points (68%), repeatedly stretching every inch of his 6-foot-4 frame to deny would-be passing shots form Van Assche — though the Frenchman snuck his fair share of winners beyond his opponent at net.

There were also a combined 20 break points in the match, with Van Assche saving seven of nine and Michelsen erasing eight of 11. In his three group-stage matches, Van Assche saved a combined 31 of 40 break points (78%).

Medjedovic Moves Top Of Group With Van Assche Victory

After winning a marathon five-setter to open his Next Gen ATP Finals presented by NEOM campaign, Hamad Medjedovic got the job done in four sets on Wednesday night against second seed Luca Van Assche.

In a 4-2, 2-4, 4-3(7), 4-1 victory, the Serbian saved three set points and battled back from 1/5 down in a pivotal third-set tie-break. In serving out the match, he saved three break points as he closed out the win with two unreturned serves.

"For sure the tie-break changed a lot of things in this match," said the World No. 110. "He had three set points. I stayed focussed on the important points. I was consistent, hitting the ball hard, and I'm glad that I won the tie-break."

[ATP AWARDS]

Medjedovic moved to the top of the Red Group at 2-0 behind the win. Both his form and his record leave him in strong position to qualify for the semi-finals, though his place in the knockout stages is not yet confirmed.

"I felt that my backhand today worked really well," said the powerful Serbian, who hit 29 winners, including 13 aces. "I was having confidence playing to his backhand, also on the forehand. I played good from both sides."

The 20-year-old will bid to complete a perfect 3-0 group campaign on Thursday when he meets Abdullah Shelbayh. Van Assche, now 1-1 in Jeddah, will play American Alex Michelsen on the final day of group play.

An Introduction To 'Basecamp' At The Next Gen ATP Finals presented by NEOM

Welcome to Basecamp.

Seven competitors at the 2023 Next Gen ATP Finals presented by NEOM were put through their paces Sunday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. 'Basecamp' is one of a several innovations being introduced for the latest edition of the 21-and-under event, to be held from 28 November to 2 December.

So what exactly is Basecamp? Similar to the NFL's Scouting Combine, it is a selection of tailored and general challenges that measure the physical and athletic skills of participants. The tests, which highlight the demands of being a professional tennis player, can be used to showcase the attributes of the ATP Tour’s next generation of tennis stars.

Here is all you need to know about Basecamp’s four challenges:

Vertical Jump

How It Works: Conducted on court using Force Plates, the player stands flat-footed on a mat before jumping and reach as high as they can. The player’s height off the floor will be measured to determine a score.
Attribute Being Measured: Power

10-Metre Sprint

How It Works: Conducted on court using timing gates and computer vision sprint assessment technology. From a static start, the player sprints 10 metres between timing gates as fast as possible.
Attributes Being Measured: Acceleration, Speed, Sprint Mechanics

Andullah Shelbayh

5-0-5 Test

How It Works: The player starts on the centre of the baseline, facing the net. Two Light Signals are positioned close to the net, next to each other. If the left-hand Light Signal flashes, the player must run directly left to the side of the court and then back to the centre of the baseline. If the right-hand Light Signal flashes, the player must run directly right to the side of the court and then back to the centre of the baseline.
Attributes Being Measured: Agility, Reaction Time

Star Drill

How It Works: Conducted on court using Reactive Light Signals and timing gates. The player begins on the centre of the baseline and completes five out-and-back shuttle runs in a star formation, as fast as possible. The player must face the net at all times, and touch the Reactive Light Signal on the floor at each tip of the star.
Attribute Being Measured: Tennis-specific Movement

Day 2 Preview: Will Fils Or Cobolli Remain Undefeated?

Arthur Fils and Flavio Cobolli will meet in a clash of undefeated players Wednesday afternoon at the Next Gen ATP Finals presented by NEOM in Jeddah.

The top-seeded Fils made a good start to his run at the 21-and-under tournament on Tuesday when he battled past Italian Luca Nardi in five sets. The Frenchman will try to maintain his momentum against Nardi’s countryman, Cobolli, with both stars 1-0 in Green Group. Fils admitted to having to adjust to the special ruleset, including no warmup on court immediately before the match.

“It’s a mental adjustment, but it’s also a physical one,” Fils said. “Normally I never play before a match. Today I had to play right before with my coaches.”

[ATP APP]

Cobolli, who last month cracked the Top 100 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings for the first time, defeated 2022 Milan semi-finalist Dominic Stricker in four sets.

In an evening session match between the other two undefeated players, second seed Luca Van Assche will take on Serbian Hamad Medjedovic, who closed the event’s opening day with a thrilling five-set win against American Alex Michelsen that ended at 12:49 a.m. local time.

Medjedovic will take confidence from holding off Michelsen's comeback attempt from two sets down. The Serbian is coached by former World No. 12 Viktor Troicki.

Van Assche pushed Medjedovic’s countryman, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, to three sets in Banja Luka earlier this year one round after upsetting former World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka.

In the afternoon session, Nardi will play Stricker and in the evening Shelbayh will face Michelsen.

Van Assche Wins Physical Opener With Shelbayh

Luca Van Assche joined fellow Frenchman Arthur Fils as a first-day winner at the Next Gen ATP Finals presented by NEOM, but only after a physical four-set win over Jordan’s Abdullah Shelbayh Tuesday in Jeddah.

After splitting the first two sets that were filled with punishing, extended baseline exchanges, the tournament’s second seed broke clear of Shelbayh in the third and ultimately closed out the match 4-3(5), 3-4(5), 4-1, 4-1

Shelbayh thrilled enthusiastic local Jeddah fans with his creative angles, net approaches and regular drop shots, but Van Assche’s slight edge in the backcourt was telling. Shelbayh also paid the price for converting just two of 17 break points.

[ATP AWARDS]

“It was a tough match today, against a very tough opponent. I know Abdullah very well, he’s an amazing player," Van Assche said. "He was almost at home with the crowd cheering for him. It was a good match for me and really tough from the beginning to the end.”

“It’s very difficult to not have a warm up before the match, so I just hit a couple of balls before in the second court.”

Shelbayh clipped 28 winners to Van Assche's 17, but his 34 unforced errors proved costly.

‘If They Can Do It, I Can Do It’: Ballkids Inspired By Next Gen ATP Finals In Jeddah

The Next Gen ATP Finals presented by NEOM's arrival in Jeddah is set to inspire a generation of young Saudi tennis enthusiasts — and not least those who will be just metres from the action next week at King Abdullah Sports City.

The first ATP-sanctioned event ever to be held in Saudi Arabia will take place from 28 November-2 December. It will be a historic moment for tennis in the Gulf nation and promises to be a particularly memorable one for the 19-strong team of ballkids, aged between 10 and 15, who will be on hand to help ensure the event runs smoothly.

“I’m really excited. I play tennis five or six times a week, so I had ballboy training a couple of times a week too,” ballboy Sulaiman Ashoor told ATPTour.com on Saturday in Jeddah. “I have seen live tennis before at a tournament in Riyadh. I saw Stan Wawrinka and Dominic Thiem. It was really fun. I like seeing the players up close because if they can do it, it means I can do it.”

Sulaiman’s sister Tala Ashoor is one of six ballgirls on the team. A keen tennis fan and player like her brother, Tala is ready to relish the experience of being on court with some of the world’s best young professional players.

“I’m really excited, it’s my first time being a ballkid, but I’m also nervous,” said Tala, who was asked to take part in training for the event via her tennis coach. "The training was a lot, but it’s fun. My friends and family will come to watch when I am on court."

Like her brother Sulaiman, Tala enjoys playing tennis and other sports in her spare time and particularly looks up to a trailblazer of the Arab sporting world.

"I play tennis six times a week and my favourite player is (Tunisian WTA star) Ons Jabeur,” said Tala. “I play tennis mainly, but I also like ping-pong.”

Another ballkid, Abdulaziz Aloqibi, is hoping that spending time under the lights on the indoor hard court in King Abdullah Sports City will be a small stepping stone on his own path to a future in professional tennis.

“I’m excited because my dream is to become a tennis player and I really want to meet tennis players,” said Abdulaziz. “When I grow up, I want to know what it’s like to be on the court and how it feels to be in front of thousands.

“I play tennis six days a week, for two hours. My favourite player here is definitely Dominic Stricker, I really like him. On the ATP Tour I also like Novak Djokovic.”

Regardless of what their future holds, the ballkids standing on court this week will have a unique opportunity to witness top-level pros competing against each other at close distance.

“I’m really excited about this because it is a first-time experience,” said Fares Ayman. “To be on a court where players are playing. I’m really excited but it’s making me nervous at the same time. I only saw tennis on TV before, so that’s making me more nervous.

“I play maybe six days a week and have done for the past two years. I like Rafael Nadal because he’s left-handed like me, and a fighter. He doesn’t leave any ball.”

Tiafoe Hits The Ice With Ovechkin & The NHL's Washington Capitals

Frances Tiafoe is a prominent supporter of the NBA's Washington Wizards, but this week the American paid a visit to another one of his favourite local pro teams. Instead of the basketball hardwood, Tiafoe hit the ice for some hockey with the NHL's Washington Capitals.

"That's way faster than it looks!" a surprised Tiafoe said after attempting to control a pass.

The World No. 16 was more at ease when he mixed in some tennis fun, rallying with Capitals forward Tom Wilson and bombing serves to test the players' reactions. Tiafoe also made time for a photo opportunity with NHL legend Alex Ovechkin in the locker room, and the pair signed a tennis racquet and a hockey stick for one another.

A native of Hyattsville, Maryland, just outside of Washington, D.C., Tiafoe has supported the teams in the area since his youth. Speaking in front of the Capitals team, Tiafoe explained that he grew up playing tennis just 20 minutes outside of the city.

De Minaur's Comeback Heroics Pave Way To Davis Cup SFs For Australia

Alex de Minaur led a great escape for Australia at the Davis Cup Final 8 on Wednesday to send his country into the semi-finals in Malaga.

The 2022 Davis Cup runners-up were in a big hole against the Czech Republic after Tomas Machac beat Jordan Thompson 6-4, 7-5 and Jiri Lehecka built a 6-4, 5-3 lead against De Minaur. But from deuce in his 3-5 service game, the 24-year-old won 10 straight points to turn the match on its head.

Showing his famed fighting spirit, De Minaur levelled the tie at 1-1 with a 4-6, 7-6(2), 7-5 victory, breaking late in the final set before serving out the match to love.

[SWEEPSTAKES]

That set the stage for a decisive doubles rubber that pit Aussies Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell against Czechs Lehecka and Adam Pavlasek. Behind a single break in each set, Ebden/Purcell scored a 6-4, 7-5 win to put Australia through to the semi-finals.

The 28-time Davis Cup champions will next face surprise semi-finalists Finland on Friday. Australia is second only to the United States (32 titles) on the all-time Davis Cup trophy list.

Virtanen Stars In Historic Finland Win At Davis Cup Finals

Finland's best-ever Davis Cup run continued on Tuesday at the Final 8 in Malaga, where Otto Virtanen scored wins in singles and doubles to send his country through to the semi-finals at the expense of defending champion Canada.

The 22-year-old Virtanen defeated Canada's Gabriel Diallo 6-4, 7-5 to force a decisive doubles rubber, then teamed with Harri Heliovaara to beat Alexis Galarneau and Vasek Pospisil 7-5, 6-3 in front of vocal Finnish support in Spain.

[SWEEPSTAKES]

Virtanen's heroics were required after Milos Raonic staked Canada an early advantage with a 6-3, 7-5 victory against Patrick Kaukovalta to open the day's play. The 32-year-old Raonic opened the match with four straight aces and never looked back.

But Virtanen levelled the tie by breaking once in each set against Diallo, and a late break in each set of the doubles match sealed a famous victory for the Finns.

Through to the semi-finals in Malaga, Finland await the winner of Wednesday's matchup between Australia and the Czech Republic.

From Turin To Malaga, Djokovic Targets Davis Cup Glory

On Sunday night, Novak Djokovic was lifting the Nitto ATP Finals trophy for a record seventh time. Less than 24 hours had passed when he boarded a flight on Monday at 4:10 pm CET, carrying the No. 1 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings from Turin to Malaga, where he joined Serbia’s team in the Final 8 of the Davis Cup.

In the terminal, he was awaited by Feliciano Lopez, the director of the Davis Cup, who gave him a special welcome: “What’s up, man?! Congratulations!” “Hey, man,” Djokovic answered jokingly before a warm embrace.

The Balkan side, captained by Viktor Troicki, and led by Djokovic, will also count Laslo Djere, Dusan Lajovic, Miomir Kecmanovic and Hamad Medjedovic among its ranks.

[SWEEPSTAKES]

Serbia will play in the quarter-finals of the competition on Thursday 23 November (not before 4:00 pm CET) against a Great Britain outfit that will have to make do without Andy Murray, who recently announced his withdrawal. The news means Cameron Norrie, Jack Draper, Liam Broady, Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury will take on Djokovic’s men.

Salisbury is also arriving at the Davis Cup as a Nitto ATP Finals champion having claimed the doubles crown alongside the American Rajeev Ram. On Sunday they successfully defended the title they earned last year in Turin.

Djokovic, who celebrates his 400th week as the World No. 1 this week, has played 61 matches this season, with a record of 55-6. He will now try to put the icing on the cake after a brilliant season with victory at the Davis Cup and what would be his second Salad Bowl (2010).

Ajdukovic, Kypson Soar To Career-Highs After Challenger Triumphs

Duje Ajdukovic and American Patrick Kypson ascended to career-highs in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings Monday after they each claimed their second ATP Challenger Tour title of the season this weekend.

Ajdukovic returned to the winners’ circle in Kobe, Japan, where he cruised past home hope Sho Shimabukoro 6-4, 6-2 in the Hyogo Noah Challenger final. Ajdukovic, 22, won three deciding-set matches en route to the title.

The split native won his maiden Challenger title in August in Luedenscheid, Germany and following his title run in Japan, Ajdukovic is at a career-high No. 145 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings.

Kypson defeated second seed Alex Michelsen 6-4, 6-3 in the Paine Schwartz Partners Challenger final in Champaign, Illinois. The 24-year-old American started the year outside the Top 500 and has now risen to a career-high No. 192 following his first hard-court title.

“I’ve played a lot on clay, I maybe prefer clay a little bit but I think my game is suitable for faster surfaces as well,” Kypson told commentator Mike Cation. “I think I can play on everything, it’s just a matter of doing the things that are required for each surface. I think one of my skills is that I can adapt to the conditions pretty well. As long as I play the style that needs to, I think I can have success on any surface, so I’m happy to win on a hard court.”

Players from the United States have now tied Italians for third most ATP Challenger Tour titles in 2023 (16), trailing Argentina (21) and France (27). Kypson won the USTA’s Roland Garros wild card challenge earlier this season and is now in prime position to win the USTA’s wild card competition for the Australian Open, only trailing Michelsen, who could get into the season’s first major via direct entry.

Michelsen, who cracked the Top 100 for the first time last Monday, will next travel to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to compete at the Next Gen ATP Finals presented by NEOM.

In other ATP Challenger Tour action, Belgian Zizou Bergs dropped just one set all week at the Challenger Banque Nationale de Drummondville in Canada, where he defeated second seed James Duckworth 6-4, 7-5 in the final to lift his sixth Challenger trophy.

“It’s especially special because it comes after a period that was harder because of an injury I had,” Bergs said. “To have a good, convincing week means a lot to me. It gives me motivation and confidence for finishing this year strong.”

Bergs, who is No. 152 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings, suffered a left wrist injury in July which forced him to hit only slice backhands for three months. The Drummondville Challenger was Bergs’ second tournament since returning to full health.

German Maximilian Marterer rallied past last year’s Next Gen ATP Finals champion Brandon Nakashima 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the Good to Great Challenger final in Danderyd, Sweden. The 28-year-old lefty is a nine-time ATP Challenger Tour champion, including two triumphs this season.

“I came with a lot of confidence from the last weeks to this event,” said Marterer, who made the Ismaning Challenger final earlier this month. “I felt really good from the first practise I had here, so it was about keeping the head down and going round by round.

“It gives me a lot of good emotions and confidence for next year. During the year, it was not easy for me. I was ranked in a different region and had some issues with my body. Never expected to finish inside the Top 100 at the end of the year. It’s crazy how it turned into a positive way.”

At the Uruguay Open in Montevideo, Facundo Diaz Acosta was crowned champion after Brazilian Thiago Monteiro was forced to retire due to a right hand injury with the Argentine leading 6-3, 4-3.

Diaz Acosta has enjoyed a career-best season. The 22-year-old made his Top 100 debut in July and has collected four ATP Challenger Tour trophies this year. A pivotal moment came for the Buenos Aires native in the semi-finals Saturday, when he saved three match points to survive Gustavo Heide.

Djokovic Secures Another Record With Turin 'Big Title'

Novak Djokovic punctuated another memorable year on Sunday by etching his name in the history books once again.

The 36-year-old defeated Jannik Sinner in Turin on Sunday for his record-breaking seventh Nitto ATP Finals title. The Serbian had shared the tournament record with Roger Federer (6 titles).

It also marked his 71st 'Big Title', which is a combination of Grand Slam championships, trophies at the Nitto ATP Finals and ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, and Olympic singles gold medals. Djokovic owns the standalone record for championships at Grand Slams (24), Nitto ATP Finals (7) and ATP Masters 1000s (40).

Six of the ATP Tour-leading seven trophies Djokovic has earned this year have been 'Big Titles'. It is the most he has claimed in a season since 2016. Of the titles Djokovic has won, more than 72 per cent of them have been 'Big Titles'.

Djokovic has won one ‘Big Title’ for every 3.1 events played (71/218). The player closest to him in winning rate at these events is Rafael Nadal, who has won one for every 3.5 tournaments played.

The World No. 1 is now a 98-time tour-level titlist. Djokovic will now turn his attention to becoming the third player to eclipse the 100-titles mark, joining Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103).

Ram/Salisbury Continue Title Defence In Turin, Reach Final

Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury moved to within one win of successfully defending their Nitto ATP Finals crown on Saturday when they defeated Santiago Gonzalez and Edouard Roger-Vasselin, ending the fourth seeds Year-End ATP Doubles No. 1 presented by Pepperstone hopes.

As they have done throughout their time together, the American-British pair came up with big shots in big moments, finding first serves and penetrating returns to triumph 7-6(5), 3-6, 10-7 after one hour and 50 minutes.

Ram and Salisbury have now won their past nine matches in Turin, having lifted the trophy at the year-end event 12 months ago. They will aim to make it 10 and successive crowns when they play Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos in the final.

"It is amazing," Salisbury said. "I can't quite believe it. We have had some really tough matches this week. We have not always played our best but we managed to come through and it feels that there is something speical playing here. It is amazing to play in another final here tomorrow."

[ATP APP]

Earlier this season, the American-British team won their third consecutive US Open crown, while they won tour-level events in Lyon and Vienna.

"It took us sticking together and believing that got us through in the end," Ram said. "The tennis is so marginal. Those guys have had a great year and great recent form."

Gonzalez and Roger-Vasselin were making their first appearance at the year-end event as a team, with Gonzalez the third Mexican to qualify for the semi-finals in tournament history. The Mexican-French pair lifted five tour-level trophies this year, including ATP Masters 1000 crowns in Miami and Paris.

Gonzalez and Roger-Vasselin can no longer finish the year at No. 1. If Granollers and Zeballos win the title they will end the season in top spot. If not, Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek will receive Year-End ATP Doubles No. 1 presented by Pepperstone honours.

Ram and Salisbury have now won three Match Tie-breaks at this year's Nitto ATP Finals.

Carlos Alcaraz will renew his rivalry with Novak Djokovic when they face off in the semi-final of the ATP Finals.

from Daily Express :: Tennis Feed https://ift.tt/Sei8s6B

Alcaraz Wants Djokovic To Bring His 'A' Game

The transformation from Monday to Friday has been spectacular. Carlos Alcaraz has gone from being ‘mentally exhausted’ after his loss to Alexander Zverev, to reaching the semi-finals of the Nitto ATP Finals by consecutively sinking Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev. The Spaniard will now clash with Novak Djokovic on Saturday in the semi-finals after a turnaround that means he can aspire to go all the way at Turin’s Pala Alpitour.

So, what exactly happened?

“I spoke to Juan Carlos [Ferrero] after the first match,” admitted Alcaraz. “Obviously, something was up. In the last tournaments, the people closest to me, and even those that don’t know me so well, could see that I didn’t have the same attitude as at the start of the season. It’s not a question of being tired or not, it’s about enjoying myself.

“Juan Carlos opened my eyes. This is the last tournament of the year and I have to give everything I have. We’re at the [Nitto] ATP Finals. We also spoke about the level and what I had to do. Once again, I realised that my game depends on whether or not I enjoy myself, whether or not I smile. At the end of the day, that’s the most important thing for me. Obviously, the joy and the smile have returned to my game and I think that was reflected in the matches.”

On Saturday, the two-time Grand Slam champion will have to enjoy himself, smile, and possibly do even more when he squares off against Djokovic for the fourth time this season (2-2 in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series). In 2023, the Serbian won their first battle in the semi-finals of Roland Garros, Alcaraz returned the favour in the Wimbledon final, and Djokovic reaped his revenge in the decider at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

“Hopefully it’ll be a repeat of what happened in the Wimbledon final,” said the Spaniard. “I’m going to try and find my A-game. We’ll see what I did well in order to repeat it tomorrow. It’ll be a very mental game, and I want to start preparing tonight.

“I hope that Novak plays at a great level, his A-game. We’re in the semis of the ATP Finals, a tournament he has won six times. He knows what it is to play in these rounds at events like this. I think that he’ll use that experience tomorrow and he’ll play his best tennis. He’ll try to pressure me a lot in the match, basically, he’ll be true to his style. So we’re going to have to be ready for that.”

[ATP APP]

Alcaraz has gone from saying that he could not see himself winning a single match in the tournament after losing to Zverev on day one, to declaring, having taken out Rublev, he believed he could go all the way at the season’s grand finale.

“After my level the last couple of days, your mind starts thinking things,” said Alcaraz. “Right now, I think if I continue at this level, I’ll have a chance of winning the tournament.”

Ram/Salisbury Stay Perfect In Turin

Defending champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury maintained their perfect record at this year’s Nitto ATP Finals on Friday when they downed already-eliminated Rinky Hijikata and Jason Kubler 5-7, 6-1, 10-2.

Ram and Salisbury, who had already qualified for the semi-finals, won 79 per cent (30/38) of their first-serve points to triumph after 83 minutes, improving to 3-0 in Red Group play. The sixth seeds will meet Santiago Gonzalez and Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the last four, with Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos taking on Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden.

[SWEEPSTAKES]

Ram and Salisbury have now won their past eight matches in Turin, having lifted the trophy at the year-end event 12 months ago. Earlier this season, the American-British team won their third consecutive US Open crown.

Granollers/Zeballos Complete Perfect Group Stage In Turin

Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos maintained their perfect start at the 2023 Nitto ATP Finals with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph against Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni on Thursday in Turin.

The Spanish-Argentine pair Granollers and Zeballos notched a break in each set to wrap an 84-minute win and ensure they will finish at the top of Red Group with a 3-0 record. They will now prepare for their third Nitto ATP Finals semi-final as a team, having also reached that stage in 2020 (in London) and 2021 (in Turin).

The win also kept alive Granollers and Zeballos’ hopes of clinching the Year-End ATP Doubles No. 1 presented by Pepperstone honour for the first time. The pair is currently fifth in the Pepperstone ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings, but can jump to a first-place finish by lifting the Nitto ATP Finals trophy for the first time as a team.

Santiago Gonzalez and Edouard Roger-Vasselin advanced from Red Group in second position after they saved a match point before downing top seeds Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek 6-4, 3-6, 15-13 earlier on Thursday.

Dialling In From Deep: Can Medvedev Counter Alcaraz Net Charge In Turin?

If a long tried-and-tested approach does not seem to be working, do you stick with it, or twist?

That could have been the dilemma for Daniil Medvedev earlier this year after he fell to consecutive heavy defeats against Carlos Alcaraz in Indian Wells and at Wimbledon, respectively. Medvedev struggled to counter Alcaraz’s top-class net play and use of drop shots in both matches, leading to suggestions that he may need to alter his trademark deep return position in order to beat the Spaniard.

Yet Medvedev is not one to question his own game, which has helped him earn 20 tour-level titles and made him a No. 1 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings. He ignored any external calls to stand further forward to counter Alcaraz’s serve-and-volley charges, and he was vindicated in style at the US Open semi-finals in September, when he ousted the Spaniard across four sets in New York.

“That was a great feeling, because for sure before the match, especially against someone like Carlos, everyone on the internet was saying, ‘He has no chance if he doesn't change his position’,” Medvedev told ATPTour.com. “You always have a chance. It's just that against some types of players, maybe you're going to be a little bit more vulnerable.”

Medvedev is 2-0 at this week's Nitto ATP Finals after defeating Andrey Rublev and Alexander Zverev in Turin. On Friday, he plays Alcaraz in his final match in Red Group, the pair's fifth Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting. The World No. 3 will hope the result echoes their most recent clash in New York, as opposed to their two opening encounters of 2023.

Medvedev won just five games against Alcaraz across two sets in the Indian Wells final in March, and nine games across three sets in the pair’s Wimbledon semi-final. While those results were disappointing, they were also learning experiences for Medvedev, who felt that the spacious environment of Arthur Ashe Stadium might also help him as he prepared for the US Open clash.

“Before the match, I was like, ‘Okay, I see what he's doing’,” said Medvedev. “I think maybe on this court at the US Open, maybe I'm going to be okay returning from far and I’m going to be able to put him in trouble.

“If I saw that was not the case during the match, I might have had to change it, but at Wimbledon I tried to change my position on the return, and it didn't work at all. Especially on grass, it's tough to change things up during the match. At the US Open I straightaway felt like, ‘Wow, I feel like I can do something from this position. I can put him in trouble’.”

Although he has not made any significant change to his routine on return, it does not mean Medvedev is not open to new ideas. As coach Gilles Cervara revealed to ATPTour.com at the US Open, the pair looked at a return position closer to the baseline when they first started working together, although it ultimately proved a no-go.

“For sure there were some moments when we tried to work on different things,” recalled Medvedev. “Sometimes I can be against it. I don't remember exactly, but usually what happens is at the beginning, I'm like, "Yeah, whatever. Why are we doing this?’ But then I try to do it well, so it’s good work anyway. Then the question is, do I do it in the match or not?”

[SWEEPSTAKES]

Besides, Medvedev does adopt opponent-dependent changes to his return position, even if they are not obvious to the untrained eye.

“I think people can see that there are some matches where I go a little bit closer to the baseline, depending on the conditions,” he said. “There are some conditions where you're going to break a guy maybe only one or two times in a three-set match.

“I don’t care if I return close to the baseline and I always get one or two points because of it, but then I miss the other three returns and he always wins the game at 40/30. I prefer to maybe lose three games at 40/0, where he's going to do serve and volley or something. But then there is going to be this one game where he's going to get a little tight, I’m going to get one or two returns, and I break.

“So it's always this constant thinking, ‘How should I do it?’ Sometimes after the match, I can think, ‘I should have done it differently’, when I lose. You never know if it's going to work, but I do change sometimes. Sometimes [my changes] are bigger, so maybe people can notice, sometimes not.”

Of course, whether or not to adjust a game plan for a specific opponent is not a dilemma unique to Medvedev. In fact, his return position makes the World No. 3 himself a particularly tricky proposition to prepare for, something he believes helped him this year become champion in Miami for the first time.

“I remember in Indian Wells, Alcaraz beat me quite easily doing a lot of drop shots,” recalled Medvedev. “Then in Miami the next week, everyone against me was trying to do a lot of drop shots, but they don’t do it the same. So I was just running there and hitting winners.”

Defending Champs Ram/Salisbury Hold Firm For Turin Semi-Final Spot

Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury extended their Nitto ATP Finals winning streak to seven matches on Wednesday in Turin. In doing so, they sealed a semi-final spot at the prestigious season finale for the fourth consecutive year.

The defending champions Ram and Salisbury held firm for a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 win against Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski inside the Pala Alpitour. Now 2-0 in Red Group, they are already assured a place in the last four regardless of what happens in their third match against Rinky Hijikata and Jason Kubler.

Ram and Salisbury have struggled for their usual consistency this year but became ATP Tour champions in Lyon in May and Vienna in October, either side of defending their title at the US Open. They are now 34-18 for the season after holding firm in a tense Match Tie-break to wrap an 83-minute triumph against Koolhof and Skupski.

[SWEEPSTAKES]

A single break decided each of the first two sets in an absorbing encounter, the first between the two teams since Ram and Salisbury prevailed in the 2022 Nitto ATP Finals semi-finals. The American-British pair notched the first break of the match in the sixth game en route to winning an opening set in which they saved five break points, but Koolhof and Skupski broke to love in the eighth game of the second to draw level.

After edging their second-seeded rivals in a tight Match Tie-break by winning seven of nine points from 3/5 , Ram and Salisbury are now 14-5 across five appearances at the Nitto ATP Finals. They also reached the championship match in Turin in 2021, before their title run last year.

With a 1-1 record for the week, Koolhof and Skupski next face a straight shootout to become the second team to advance from Red Group against Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden.

Granollers/Zeballos Seal Nitto ATP Finals Semi-Final Spot

Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos are the first confirmed semi-finalists at the 2023 Nitto ATP Finals.

The Spanish-Argentine duo defeated top seeds Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek 6-4, 6-4 on Tuesday evening in Turin to book their spot in the last four. They clinched a single break in each set to improve to 2-0 for the week at the Pala Alpitour and ensure their progress to the semi-finals at the prestigious season finale for the third time as a team (2020-21, 2023).

Granollers and Zeballos clinically converted both break points they earned to notch their 36th tour-level win of the year and improve to 6-7 as a team at the Nitto ATP Finals. Now 2-0 in Green Group, the fifth seeds are assured of a semi-final spot regardless of what happens in their third match against Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni.

Dodig and Krajicek were not without their chances in the first tour-level meeting on a hard court between the two teams. They carved out four break points in the first set, but were unable to convert any as Granollers and Zeballos held firm at key moments throughout the 87-minute encounter.

The Croatian-American duo Dodig and Krajieck, who lead the Pepperstone ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings with a 39-14 record, enter their final match against Santiago Gonzalez and Edouard Roger-Vasselin on Friday with a 1-1 record for the week. The match will be a shootout for second place in the group, with Gonzalez and Roger-Vasselin also 1-1 after they beat Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni.

Defending Champs Ram/Salisbury Return With Win In Turin

Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury sealed a happy return to the Nitto ATP Finals on Monday in Turin.

The 2022 champions at the prestigious season finale overcame Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden 6-3, 6-4 in their opening Red Group match. A single break in each set was enough for Ram and Salisbury to clinch a 61-minute triumph and extend their winning streak at the Pala Alpitour to six matches.

The fast court in Turin appeared tailor-made for Ram and Salisbury during their 2022 title run, and the American-British duo capitalised on the conditions expertly again on Monday with a high-class serving performance. They won 83 per cent (30/36) of points behind first deliveries and saved the only break point they faced at 1-2, 40/40 in the second set.

It was the second time this year that the team’s had clashed on the big stage, after Ram and Salisbury also defeated Bopanna and Ebden in the US Open final in September. The American-British pair is aiming in Turin to become a tour-level champion for the fourth time this season, having also lifted trophies in Lyon and Vienna.

The third-seeded Bopanna and Ebden arrived in Italy having reached the championship match at their past three tournaments — the US Open, the Rolex Shanghai Masters, and the Rolex Paris Masters. India’s Bopanna is a two-time finalist at the Nitto ATP Finals, having reached that stage in London in 2012 and 2015.

Video Review Overturns Call In Opening Match At Nitto ATP Finals

Technology came into play in the first match of the 2023 Nitto ATP Finals.

Top seeds Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek led Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni 6-4, 3-1, with the Argentines serving at 30/15. Gonzalez, who was less than a metre from the net, reflexed a backhand volley through the middle of the court. Chair umpire Aurelie Tourte called a touch on Krajicek, who attempted to move his racquet out of the way as the ball flew by.

Watch Video Review:

Upon video review, which was first featured at the Nitto ATP Finals in 2020, it was deemed Krajicek had not touched the ball and they replayed the point.

“It's awesome for us as players to have that video review available, especially in doubles, where things happen so fast,” Krajicek told ATPTour.com. “Obviously it's super difficult for the referees as well to make the right call sometimes on some difficult things like not-ups and in particular, the touch that I had today that was overturned. Those kinds of things can sway a match.”

When they replayed the point, Dodig missed a return into the net, so the call did not ultimately impact the result. However, Krajicek was happy to have video review to at least ensure the correct call was made.

“It didn't affect the outcome of the point today, but I've had several this year where there were huge moments in tie-breaks and obviously with our format, it's a third-set tie-break and there's obviously a lot of points and money on the line here,” Krajicek said. “So to have that ability to challenge... I've had some tough not-ups this year that haven't been able to be reviewed, so it is a relief for us and we definitely are happy to have that available.”

Dodig and Krajicek won their match 6-4, 6-2.

Escobar/Nedovyesov Win Sofia Doubles Title; Nys/Zielinski Retain Metz Crown

Gonzalo Escobar and Aleksandr Nedovyesov saved two mach points in the Sofia doubles final to claim their second tour-level title as a team. The Ecuadorian/Kazakhstani team defeated third seeds Julian Cash and Nikola Mektic 6-3, 3-6, 13-11 to earn a dramatic victory in what was their fourth final in 14 tour-level tournaments together.

"A [Match] Tie-break is always a lottery, but I think in the end we were just a little bit more aggressive," said Nedovyesov. "Luck was there as well I guess... It was a great tournament."

Escobar/Nedovyesov will finish the season in 23rd place in the Pepperstone ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings after a successful close to a week in which Escobar earned his 100th tour-level doubles win. The Sofia title is the Ecuadorian's fifth at tour-level and Nedovyesov's second.

"Very happy for the title. But it's also been a tough year, so this makes me proud of the work we've done," added Escobar.

The title is their third on the ATP Tour, with their lone title outside of Metz coming earlier this season at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Rome. Tsitsipas On Nitto ATP Finals: 'It Carries A Lot Of Legacy & History'

Stefanos Tsitsipas will compete at the Nitto ATP Finals for the fifth consecutive year when he takes to court in his opening round-robin match against Jannik Sinner. The Greek views the prestigious year-end event as a season highlight.

“I do believe that the [Nitto] ATP Finals come extremely close to a Slam experience,” Tsitsipas told ATP Media on Friday. “A Grand Slam you get to play even if you're No.200 in the World, but not many people can say that they've played the Nitto ATP Finals, so for me, it has a significant importance. And it carries a lot of legacy and a lot of history with it. To be playing in such an event, very few people can brag about.”

Tsitsipas triumphed on debut at the tournament in 2019 when it was held in London. He has since won six tour-level titles, including two ATP Masters 1000 crowns (Monte-Carlo 2021, 22). The 25-year-old believes he has developed on and off the court since his crowning moment at the year-end event four years ago.

“I do have the mental calmness of a veteran and I feel that changing,” Tsitsipas said. “I felt this big change this year. I'm starting to feel and think different. This morning, I was actually reflecting on how much I have personally changed in my personality in the way also that I think about life and tennis on its own. I don't know, whether that's maturing or getting at a certain age where your perspective kind of changes but it has definitely been different for me for the past few months.”

Tsitsipas holds a 51-22 record on the year and lines up in Green Group alongside Sinner, Novak Djokovic and Holger Rune. The Greek will open his campaign against Sinner and is ready for a tough battle despite leading the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series 5-2.

“He tends to play very fearless tennis and he moves very well,” Tsitsipas said. “He has improved his movement a lot and his consistency in his shots. I do believe that he's a very athletic player. Not very muscley, not very heavy. He has that lightness about him when he covers the court. He can kind of get anywhere in the court within a few seconds and his reaction is very good. He has very good abilities and talent when it comes to feeling the ball and getting behind it.”

Tsitsipas will also face World No. 1 Djokovic in the round-robin stage. The Serbian, who is a six-time champion at the event, leads Tsitsipas 11-2 in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series.

“Novak has a very big presence when you're facing him and you can certainly feel it's tough to avoid that presence,” Tsitsipas said. “He has very good body language and his mental state and clarity when he plays is something you can really see that he's very focused in the task and in the goal that he carries with him.

"This is something rare in tennis and there aren't a lot of players that you can actually say that about them. He definitely has that intensified in his game. And that is something that I have absorbed and felt when playing him.”

Sinner Relishing Turin Expectations: 'I Love To Play Under Pressure'

All eyes will be on Italy’s Jannik Sinner when he takes to court at the Nitto ATP Finals on Sunday in Turin. The home star, who competed at the Pala Alpitour as an alternate in 2021, is relishing the opportunity to show the Italian fans he can handle the pressure on one of the sport’s biggest stages.

“I'm happy to be here,” Sinner told ATP Media ahead of his first round-robin match against Stefanos Tsitsipas. “Happy that this event is here in Turin. Hopefully it's something positive for me trying to have a great connection with the crowd and hopefully I can handle it and handle the situation with the right mentality, because I feel I have a little bit more pressure, which is a very positive sign for me.

“I love to play under pressure. I love to play tie-breaks, I love to play the important points because I feel like there you can see who has what kind of game. And I feel like I'm trying to find as many important points as possible. Also because this makes you grow and also I'm here trying to win, but also to add some experience package for the next tournaments.”

Sinner has been drawn in Green Group at the prestigious year-end event alongside Novak Djokovic, Tsitsipas and Holger Rune. The 22-year-old is aware of the threats all three bring but is hoping to use the crowd support and prior Turin experience to his advantage this week.

“I had a great feeling two years ago when I went to court with the crowd,” said Sinner, who played two round-robin matches as an alternate in 2021. “The connection was great and hopefully I can have a little bit or the same amount of connection. The crowd is going to stay behind me in good times but hopefully especially in the bad times that they push me. They give me some positive energy and hopefully I can convert it into a high level.”

Sinner, who is the only Italian in the eight-man singles field, was the fourth player to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals after a standout season. The World No. 4 won four tour-level titles in 2023, including his maiden ATP Masters 1000 crown in Toronto.

The 22-year-old hopes he can use the momentum from his year in Turin.

“I had a very good season and I played fewer tournaments than last year but I played more matches,” said Sinner, who is 57-14 on the year. “It's obviously a great sign for me and how I ended the past several tournaments was good. Hopefully I can show this here.”

Sinner plays 2019 champion Tsitsipas in his opening Green Group match on Sunday afternoon. The Italian trails the Greek 2-5 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series but is excited by the matchup.

“His strength is the serve plays really good and his high intensity,” Sinner said. “He puts a lot of intensity on the court. He also tries to go to the net a lot more, so it's not easy to play against him. I'm really looking forward to it. It is going to be the first match for both of us.”

Turin Contenders Gather For Official Photo, Palace Tour

Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and fellow Nitto ATP Finals contenders gathered at the Royal Palace Of Turin Friday evening for a spectacular official photo, media availability and reception ahead of Sunday's opening day of play at the Pala Alpitour.

Dressed in smart casual, players signed autographs and posed for selfies with Italian fans in the late afternoon before entering the palace, where the official photo was taken on the grand staircase of the Musei Reali-Palazzo Reale di Torino, which was originally built in the 16th century.

"This palace is definitely one of the most stunning venues that I have seen in this city; it is incredibly historic and beautiful," said World No. 1 and six-time tournament champion Novak Djokovic.

"This is my third time in Turin and I have enjoyed myself very much. The whole city this week lives for tennis. You can feel a lot of interest, a lot of attention and passion for tennis and sport in general."

Once home to the House of Savoy, the palace and surrounding complex is located in the centre of Turin and is known for housing the Shroud of Turin, along with its impressive tapestries, extensive Royal Library, Museum of Antiquities and historic weapons collection.

Friday's palace visit came one day after the tournament draw. Djokovic leads the Green Group, which also features Jannik Sinner. Stefanos Tsitsipas and Holger Rune. Making his debut, Alcaraz heads the Red Group that also features Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev and Alexander Zverev.

"Obviously I'm very happy to be here first time that I have qualified officially," said Italian Jannik Sinner, who played two matches in Turin as an alternate in 2021. "Playing here in Turin means a lot to me."

The tournament runs 12-19 November. Defending champion Djokovic, who is on an 18-match winning streak, is seeking a record-breaking seventh Nitto ATP Finals crown. The Serbian also needs to win just one match to be guaranteed of earning ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by Pepperstone honours for the eighth time.

Ram & Salisbury Look To Go Back-To-Back In Turin

Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury completed their US Open trifecta in September, capturing the title at Flushing Meadows for a third consecutive year. Now the American-British duo sets their sights on another coveted title defense: the Nitto ATP Finals.

Ram and Salisbury have found their form with a late-season surge, claiming the title in two of their past three events. Perhaps no better memory than in New York, where they captured their fourth major team trophy.

“We've had great success there and we've done well. I don't think you can ever just assume that you're going to win a major,” Ram told Chris Bowers on the ATP Podcast. “But we seem to play our best there for sure. For whatever reason, I think a lot of things suit our game [there] and as tennis players, we tend to do well at places we've done well before.

“I do think it's a pretty substantial achievement that we were able to win it three times in a row just because even if you do well in play, something has to go your way. And so for that to happen three years in a row was pretty special for us.”

Despite an uncharacteristically slow start to the season, Ram and Salisbury have qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals for a fifth consecutive year. A second consecutive title in Turin would be the best possible way to close the year for Ram and Salisbury.

“It's tough to say it's not been a good year when we've won a Grand Slam. Had we not won the US Open, it would have been a very poor year by our standards,” Salisbury said. “But the fact that we did that, we always say that we want to do the best at the biggest tournaments and we managed to win one of the Grand Slams, so that's obviously a huge achievement.

“Our aim is to be the number one team. That's kind of the standards that we want to set ourselves and measure ourselves against. We're obviously quite a long way off that this year. Obviously that's pretty high standards to have. But that's where we want to be.”

Boasting a 12-5 record together at the year-end event, the duo has won nine of the past 10 matches in Turin. Their first appearance ended in a round-robin exit. Since then, they have progressed one step further each year: semi-finals in 2020, runners-up in 2021 and champions a year ago. A sixth trip to the Nitto ATP Finals will only add to the list of the memories the duo cherishes from the event.

[SWEEPSTAKES]

“I think qualifying my first time just because it felt like it's such a big achievement,” Ram said. “To be there with the top eight singles guys, it's just a different feel. It's a smaller group of people, they do really make an effort to make you feel special, which is really nice. Then last year winning it, we went undefeated. We got close the year before, we were undefeated until the final, but to win it and especially to go undefeated is really special.”

Salisbury added, “I think the first time we qualified was a pretty amazing experience. It was the first full year that I was playing with Rajeev. I don't think we qualified until the Paris Masters, which was pretty amazing. Just to be there on that stage playing at the O2 Arena [in London] was incredible. We’ve done better each year that we played it up until winning it last year. So that was an incredible way to finish the season and one of the best matches we played in that final as well. It is a really special tournament.”
