The Wimbledon Press Moment You Have To See

Andy Murray uses his talents to entertain tennis fans throughout the world. But on Saturday, he pleasured a new audience: the press.

The former World No. 1, who will begin his Wimbledon campaign against Benoit Paire, was in the middle of analysing the Frenchman's game when cheers were heard in the interview room, interrupting the Scot's response.

"I can't believe I'm missing this match," Murray said. "It's like 4-2 or something."

Murray did his press conference during the second half of a Round of 16 World Cup match between France and Argentina. A reporter corrected Murray, saying France was leading 3-2. And the 31-year-old responded with a perfect joke: "Should we just go?"

Don't worry, Murray stayed to fulfill the rest of his press obligations. But soon after, it was off to watch the rest of the football match. And Murray did not turn out to be Nostradamus. The final score? France 4, Argentina 3.

Superstitions? Zverev Has None

In a sport famous for its superstitions, from Bjorn Borg's no-shave policy at Wimbledon to Kei Nishikori's refusal to call home during the 2014 US Open, one player, with hopes of achieving further success in the next decade of the sport, admits something rather surprising; he does not have any. That man is World No. 3 Alexander Zverev.

The 21-year-old, who reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final at Roland Garros this year, spoke about his thought process as he prepares for his fourth appearance at SW19.

"I'm not superstitious at all," admitted Zverev. "I don't have anything I have to do before I play. For me, if I have a great preparation, if I have great practices, I know I'll do well. This is more important for me than any superstition anybody could have."

A year ago, Zverev lost a tight five-set battle against 2016 runner-up Milos Raonic on the legendary grass. Now, one year on, the three-time ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titlist will be confident of going further in the draw, armed with superstitions or not. The tournament's No. 4 seed, who will meet Australia's James Duckworth in the first round, is 0-1 on grass this season after losing to eventual champion Borna Coric at the Gerry Weber Open last week.

"I look forward to it. I think it's Wimbledon. I think everybody looks forward to it," said Zverev. "[I got] a little bit injured in Paris. Everybody knows that. I didn't practise a lot before the tournament in Halle, so... I played it without having any practice. But now I feel really good. The practices I had here and the practices that I had after my loss in Halle were great. I feel ready to go."

With two finals to his name on grass (Halle 2016-2017), Zverev knows his way around the surface. But the 21-year-old doesn't put too much emphasis on the court, instead choosing to focus on his game.

"I mean, it's a different surface. I always said that for me the surface is not a big role. For me, it's how I play, more about how my game is at the moment," said Zverev. "I can adjust pretty well to surfaces. Obviously you have got to do a few things differently than on clay.

"You have got to maybe slice a little bit more, you have got to come in a little bit more, you have got to try to play lower. But that adjustment is made within a few days. After that, it's more about finding your shots, finding your game."

Did You Know?
Alexander Zverev owns a 20-10 FedEx ATP Win/Loss Record on grass. The German has also improved his performance by one round with each appearance he has made at Wimbledon.

Media Day Roundup: Kvitova downplays favorite status ahead of Wimbledon

First-Time Winner Spotlight: Mischa Zverev

It was well worth the wait for Mischa Zverev. Three years ago, the German was contemplating his future in pro tennis after struggling with a catalogue of injuries. Now, he is an ATP World Tour champion.

Zverev lifted his maiden trophy at the Nature Valley International, defeating Lukas Lacko 6-4, 6-4 on the grass of Eastbourne. With the win, he becomes the eighth first-time winner in 2018, matching last season's total. It marks the fourth consecutive year in which a player over the age of 30 has entered the winners' circle for the first time.

Congratulations, Mischa. How does it feel to hold your first ATP World Tour singles trophy?
Feels amazing, yes. It was definitely one of the emotional moments in my life. Beating Andy Murray in Australia was special, but there you win a match, you're still in it and the tournament's not over. But here you're the last one standing, pretty much, at the end of the week, and you have the trophy, so it's
definitely a very unique feeling.

Was winning this title something you'd always wanted to achieve when you decided to become a tennis player?
I always wanted to win at least a title. For many years I didn't believe in myself. I didn't think I was going to do it, especially when I was ranked 1100. But thank God I have my family and my brother and the whole team, my wife who is always telling me, no, you can achieve things, you can do big things. Just believe in yourself, work hard, and it's going to pay off one day. Luckily I have them, and luckily I was able to listen to them, believe in myself, and just keep working and wait for it. Finally, I'm here. It's incredible.

You reached your first tour-level final nearly eight years ago in Metz. Has lifting this first trophy weighed on you at all?
I don't know. I need to digest the week and just wake up tomorrow and see how I feel and also see how I feel in my next matches. But it's definitely something that I can put a check mark on the box. It's just phenomenal. I don't know what to say. As a player, you work towards being the best, even if it's not maybe No. 1 in the world, but being the best in the tournament in that particular week.

There are so many tournaments, but it doesn't matter. If you're the last one there on Sunday or Saturday, that means you were the best in that week at this place. And this is something that everyone works for. It's just a unique and great feeling. I hope it's going to help me in the future. It's going to take pressure off of me. It's going to give me more confidence, show me that I can play five matches and win them all and win the tournament and I can do it physically and mentally. So I hope it's going to help me.

Zverev

You have just registered your 125th tour-level singles victory in your career. How does this victory today rank among all of them?
It's probably the most important as far as getting the trophy. I mean, would I say was it the best performance, the best match or most emotional match? Probably not. I can think of matches like against Andy Murray in Australia or even John Isner in Australia where I was two sets to love down, match point down. Definitely incredibly emotionally different, but winning a trophy is just unique.

Last year was arguably the best of your career. You reached World No. 25. You beat Andy at the Aussie Open, as you said. Now that you have won this title, what's the next goal you have set your sights on?
Actually, try to improve my career-high ranking. Just see what I still have in me. Just be up there. I think I want to finish in the Top 50 and try to play well and stay healthy and be ranked Top 100 for as many years as possible.

How motivating has your brother Sascha's success been? Obviously he's playing very, very well at the moment. Did he give you a call yesterday or this morning before the final?
Actually he gave me a lot of tips against Shapovalov, because he played him a few times. He wasn't really able to help me out today because he hasn't played Lacko, and I think he hasn't
even practised with him in the past years.

But overall, he's someone who inspired me, who always made me believe in myself, because when we practise with each other, we have close matches and I can see that we're somewhat playing equally good. Then he goes on and wins big tournaments. That also makes me believe, okay, maybe I'm not too far off and I still have something inside of me which I can show one day.
So he's definitely been a big inspiration.

Is there anyone in particular you'd like to acknowledge or thank for getting you to this milestone in your career?
Anyone in particular? Probably I can't say, because it would be my mom, my dad, my brother, and my wife, because they are the closest people to me that help me 24 hours a day. But also, [physical trainer] Jez Green has been I think an unbelievable help, because since we started working, I was able to reach so many new goals and just achieve incredible things, which I wasn't even able to dream of before meeting him.

So he's definitely been a great, great support and he's done an amazing job with me. I was struggling with my physical condition back in the day, and now I actually feel like I can play five days in a row and I feel fine, or I can play best-of-five sets and I feel fine. He's someone that I want to really thank. He's done unbelievable job with both of us, my brother and I.

And lastly, aside from tennis, what would you say are your favorite interests and hobbies?
Flying. I have a pilot's license. I love flying. Before going to bed almost every night I read up on airplanes, flying, and that's my passion outside of tennis.

From Doubt To Excitement: Murray Returns To Wimbledon

For 11 months, Andy Murray was forced out of competition due to a hip injury. The former World No. 1’s ATP Ranking slipped as low as No. 157 — his lowest standing in nearly 13 years — and the Scot admitted to having ‘zero expectations’ when he returned at The Queen’s Club two weeks ago, not knowing exactly what the future held.

But the two-time Wimbledon champion put forth two solid efforts at the Fever-Tree Championships and the Nature Valley International, and the right-hander says he is prepared to play at The Championships.

“I'm pumped,” Murray said. “Four or five weeks ago, I didn't know whether I'd be capable of competing at a level I'd be happy with. I think the past couple of weeks have been beneficial… I don't think I played amazing in the matches, but I think I've done well, considering the opponents, the level of the guys that I've played against.”

In his first match back at The Queen’s Club, the Scot pushed in-form Aussie Nick Kyrgios to a final-set tie-break before succumbing. And at Devonshire Park in Eastbourne, the 31-year-old beat former World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka before losing to British No. 1 Kyle Edmund.

Now, Murray is back at the tournament that helped mold him into a national icon. He has advanced to at least the quarter-finals at the tournament in each of the past 10 years. But the lead-up to this event? Not the same.

“Wimbledon for me is obviously special for a lot of reasons. I always want to be here competing. It feels a little bit odd coming into the tournament this year,” Murray said. “Normally like at this stage I feel really nervous, lots of pressure, and I expect a lot of myself around this time of year. I've always loved that and enjoyed that in a way. It has been difficult, but enjoyed it, whereas this year it feels very, very different.”

Murray is competing in just his third tournament since last year’s Wimbledon, for starters. And with that comes a gradual increase in both health and form. It’s not easy to face world-class competition after nearly a year away from the sport.

“There're certain things that are still tricky and things I'm still trying to work through. These things are significantly better than what they were a few months ago. That's for sure. But again, it just takes time,” Murray said. “You sometimes in practice might feel really good, and then you get on the match court and you're pushing yourself a few percent harder… you learn a lot from competing.”

[ALSO LIKE]

Murray will hope to both learn and win in the first round, facing a tough test against Benoit Paire, who had two match points against top seed Roger Federer at the Gerry Weber Open this week. Murray has won both of their FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings, including a triumph over the Frenchman in the Round of 16 at Wimbledon in 2017, but knows that it won’t be easy against the World No. 48.

“Last year he obviously had a decent run here, had a couple of match points against Roger in Halle a couple of weeks ago. I think with his game, as well, the ability that he has, his athleticism, I don't see a reason for why he shouldn't play pretty well on the surface,” Murray said. “He's a tricky guy to play against because of his style. He does hit a lot of dropshots, he serve-volleys. He's unorthodox with his shot selection.”

And Murray is looking forward to the challenge. The 11 months he had to sit out were some of his most difficult. But while his form remains on the mend, one thing is as strong as ever: Murray’s love of the sport.

“If I had to stop tomorrow, yeah, I'd be pretty gutted with that because I still love playing, I love the sport. I enjoy watching it. I enjoy the traveling. There's nothing about it that I'd be looking forward to giving up,” Murray said. “I want to keep playing as long as I can, providing I'm physically capable of doing that.”

Anyone For Croquet?

Ahead of the third Grand Slam of the season at Wimbledon, 2017 Nitto ATP Finals champion Grigor Dimitrov, World No. 16 Fabio Fognini and #NextGenATP Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas took time out of their training schedule to celebrate the 150th anniversary of The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

Dimitrov, Fognini, Tsitsipas and German tennis star Andrea Petkovic, dressed to impress as they tested their croquet skills in a fun photoshoot for The Times of London newspaper. Dimitrov, who reached the semi-finalis in 2014, opted to wear a Wimbledon jacket, while Fognini and Tsitsipas decided to combine sweaters and chinos for the special photo, shot by photographer Marc Aspland.

The club, originally named The All England Croquet Club, was founded on 23 July 1868. Now, almost 150 years on, the world's elite tennis players will once again descend on SW19 with one goal; to join the list of names on the Roll Of Honour board.

Mischa's Maiden Moment: Zverev Takes Eastbourne Title

Old school tennis is alive and well in 2018. Employing an exclusive serve-and-volley gameplan, Mischa Zverev turned back the clock to take his first ATP World Tour title on Saturday at the Nature Valley International.

Zverev lifted his maiden trophy on the grass of Eastbourne with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Lukas Lacko, sprinting forward and slicing and dicing his way to the crown after one hour and 37 minutes. He is the eighth first-time winner on the ATP World Tour this year, matching last year's total.

Eight years removed from his first appearance in a title match, on the hard courts of Metz in 2010, Zverev's moment in the spotlight was well worth the wait. His victory marks the fourth consecutive year in which a player over the age of 30 has entered the winners' circle for the first time.

30 & Over First-Time Winners (since 2015)

Year Winner Age Title
2018 Mischa Zverev 30  Eastbourne
2017 Gilles Muller
33 Sydney
2016 Paolo Lorenzi 34 Kitzbuhel
2015 Victor Estrella Burgos 34  Quito

Zverev was a blanket at the net throughout the encounter, charging forward to cover every inch of Centre Court. The change in rhythm would rattle Lacko, whose unforced error count steadily rose throughout the 97-minute affair.

The German's textbook grass-court tactics paid dividends, as he converted an immediate break opportunity in the opening game of the match. Lacko had few answers on a sun-kissed afternoon in English coastal city.

Zverev would battle for a second - and decisive - break after a 21-point game midway through the second set. Lacko did well to turn aside five opportunities but was unable to deny the sixth, as Zverev claimed an unassailable lead. He secured the title with an ace on his first championship point.

When the body fails, perseverence prevails. Just three years ago, Zverev was on the brink of falling out of the ATP Rankings after a catalogue of injuries had the German reeling. Struck down by a fractured wrist, two fractured ribs, a herniated disc in his lower back, a small tear in the patella tendon in his knee, needless to say it has been a long journey to celebrate his maiden moment.

The 30-year-old joins brother Alexander Zverev as ATP World Tour titlists in 2018, marking the first time siblings have lifted singles trophies in the same season since 1989, when Emilio Sanchez and Javier Sanchez both tasted victory. He earns 250 ATP Rankings points, rising 16 spots to a projected No. 51, while also taking home €117,930 in prize money.

[ALSO LIKE]

Lacko, meanwhile, falls to 0-2 in ATP World Tour finals, appearing in his first title match since a runner-up finish in Zagreb in 2012 (l. to Youzhny). Martin Klizan remains the only Slovakian to win a tour-level title in the last 15 years. He rises 21 spots to a projected No. 73 in the ATP Rankings.

Both players will next head to Wimbledon for the grass-court Grand Slam. Zverev opens against Pierre-Hugues Herbert, with a potential third-round clash against Rafael Nadal looming. Lacko faces qualifier Benjamin Bonzi in his opener, with top seed Roger Federer a potential second round opponent.

Did You Know?
This was the seventh meeting between Zverev and Lacko. The German and the Slovakian have met at the ITF Futures and ATP Challenger Tour levels, as well as in ATP World Tour qualifying and main draws. Zverev has taken five of the seven encounters.

Dzumhur Downs Mannarino, Lifts Third Title

After collecting his first two tour-level trophies in Russia last season, Damir Dzumhur lifted his third ATP World Tour title with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 victory over Adrian Mannarino at the Turkish Airlines Open Antalya on Saturday.

Dzumhur, who won his first two ATP World Tour titles in St. Petersburg (d. Fognini) and Moscow (d. Berankis), hit eight aces and won 65 per cent of second-serve return points to improve to 3-1 in championship matches at tour-level. World No. 30 Dzumhur is projected to rise to a career-high No. 23 ATP Ranking on 1 July.

In 2017, Dzumhur became the first player from Bosnia & Herzegovina to win an ATP World Tour singles title. He is the second player from the country this season to win a tour-level crown after Mirza Basic's title run at the Diema Xtra Sofia Open.

Mannarino was bidding to win his first tour-level title but, after falling in three sets, drops to 0-5 in championship matches. The Frenchman also lost the 2017 Antalya final to Japan's Yuichi Sugita.

Watch Live

Dzumhur entered the championship match with a tournament-leading 26 per cent success rate in return games, and quickly improved upon that statistic with service breaks in the fourth and six games. The 26-year-old injected pace into his groundstrokes, especially on the backhand side, to take a 3-1 lead before doubling his advantage, two games later, with a mix of power and touch on his forehand.

Top-seeded Mannarino benefitted from back-to-back volley errors from Dzumhur to secure an early break in the second set and, from there, grew in confidence. The Frenchman improved his level on serve and, after a game of errors from Dzumhur, secured a double-break lead for 5-1. Mannarino, who led the tournament in break points saved prior to the final (18 of 21), then saved another in the seventh game before converting his third set point to force a decider.

Backhand errors proved costly for Mannarino in the final set, with three mistakes in the fourth game opening up a 3-1 lead. Dzumhur then regained his opening-set form and clinched a second break at the net to lead 5-1. The second seed then moved up the court once more to convert his second championship point, in the following game, to earn his third tour-level crown.

Dzumhur receives 250 ATP Ranking points and collects €76,020 in prize money for lifting the trophy. Mannarino gains 150 ATP Ranking points and receives €40,040.

Nadal: 'Expectations Are Always High'

Rafael Nadal, a two-time Wimbledon champion who recently lifted his 11th Coupe des Mousquetaires trophy at Roland Garros, might not have played a grass-court event ahead of The Championships. But the World No. 1 has no intention of dimming his hopes.

“Expectations are always high,” Nadal said. “I am not here to play the tournament. I am here to try to have a good results, of course. But it’s true that on the other hand, it’s one of these events that you arrive here and you really don't have the previous feeling of how you feel, how you are playing, how you are not playing.”

[ALSO LIKE]

In fact, a shortage of matches before the grass-court Grand Slam is nothing new for Nadal. When he made the final at Wimbledon in five consecutive appearances (2006-08, 2010-11), he played just three matches on the surface before the major four times. To Nadal, that’s fine. It’s just a part of the challenge.

“Even with three matches, you arrive here and you really don't know very well. It’s an event that you need to find your confidence during the tournament and during the practice the week before,” Nadal said. “When I arrive to Roland Garros, I know more or less if I am playing well or if I am not playing well. I know where my chances are, more or less. In the US Open, little bit less, but still knowing better than here."

Nadal

Nevertheless, Nadal is confident heading into his 13th appearance at the All England Club. The left-handed 32-year-old is 30-2 on the season, capturing four tour-level titles for the 11th time.

“I'm feeling good,” Nadal said. “It’s a very special event, of course. I always loved to be around here. Has been always a special thing. It was not positive for me, of course, to not play Queen's. I was sad to not have the chance to be there. On the other hand, I didn't go there because I played a lot on clay. So I was very happy.

Read: Emirates ATP Scouting Report

“I am not 20 anymore. I had to take decisions on the schedule sometimes... The body needed a rest, needed a slow adaptation to adapt to the grass. That's what I did.”

Nadal will hope that pays off, beginning with his first-round match against Israeli veteran Dudi Sela, against whom he has not lost a set in two previous FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings. The first seeded player Nadal could face is Roland Garros semi-finalist Marco Cecchinato, who reached the semi-finals this week at the Nature Valley International.. Plenty of dangerous players loom in the No. 2 seed's quarter, including No. 5 seed Juan Martin del Potro, 2017 Nitto ATP Finals runner-up David Goffin, No. 11 seed Diego Schwartzman and #NextGenATP Canadian Denis Shapovalov.

On the 10-year anniversary of his maiden triumph on the legendary grass, Nadal is simply ready to begin another run for a title.

“Today I see that like a long time ago,” Nadal said. “But the good thing is I’m still here. I am happy for that.”

Scouting Report: 10 Things To Watch At Wimbledon

The ATP World Tour's best are descending on the All England Club for the third Grand Slam of the season. Roger Federer, the top seed and defending champion, seeks a ninth title at The Championships, while World No. 1 Rafael Nadal pursues a third trophy at Wimbledon.

But there are plenty of dangerous players throughout the draw looking to earn a title on the grass. Marin Cilic, last year's runner-up, carries the momentum of a victory at the Fever-Tree Championships, while German Alexander Zverev, former World No. 1 Novak Djokovic and others have their sights set on deep runs. Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray is competing in his first major since undergoing hip surgery in January.

View Draw

10 THINGS TO WATCH AT WIMBLEDON

1) Reunited: Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray have combined to win the past 15 Wimbledon titles. They return this fortnight for the 150th anniversary of the All England Club, marking the first tournament of the season to feature the complete ‘Big Four’.

2) Nine to 99: Federer seeks his 99th title and a record-extending ninth Wimbledon championship. He begins his 20th consecutive campaign at Wimbledon just 99 wins shy of Jimmy Connors’ record 1,256 match victories. Connors is also the only man in the Open Era with more titles than Federer (109) and more Wimbledon appearances (21), though the Swiss owns the most wins at Wimbledon (91).

[ALSO LIKE]

3) Nadal Nostalgia: Ten years ago, Nadal survived a furious Federer comeback to win his first of two Wimbledon titles. Nadal reached five finals in as many appearances at Wimbledon from 2006-11. Nadal is one of 12 players in the Open Era to lift the trophy multiple times, capturing glory in 2008 and 2010.

4) Two For One: After swapping the No. 1 ATP Ranking six times this season, Nadal and Federer can both claim to be No. 1. Nadal is atop the ATP Rankings and Federer is the No. 1 seed. Federer will return to World No. 1 on 16 July if he retains the Wimbledon title and Nadal fails to reach the fourth round.

5) One of a Kind: Djokovic is the only player to beat both Nadal and Federer in a Grand Slam final, defeating the Spaniard in 2011 and the Swiss in 2014 and 2015 for his three Wimbledon titles. After ending his 2017 season in the Wimbledon quarter-finals due to a right elbow injury, Djokovic is rounding into form. The Serbian reached the semi-finals in Rome, the quarter-finals at Roland Garros and last week advanced to The Queen’s Club final for the second time (l. to Cilic).

Read: Five Must-See First-Round Matches At Wimbledon

6) Welcome Home: Like Djokovic, Murray did not play again in 2017 after Wimbledon. Unlike Djokovic, he missed the first 24 weeks of 2018 as well. Following right hip surgery on 8 January, Murray will make his Grand Slam return against Benoit Paire, whom he beat at 2017 Wimbledon. The Scot pushed Nick Kyrgios to a third-set tie-break at The Queen’s Club and beat Wawrinka in Eastbourne.

7) Croats on Grass: Marin Cilic and Borna Coric of Croatia arrive at the All England Club after sweeping ATP World Tour 500-level grass-court titles on 24 June. Cilic saved a championship point to defeat Djokovic at the Fever-Tree Championships shortly after Coric denied Federer his 10th title at Halle in the Gerry Weber Open final.

8) Sascha Striving: Alexander Zverev reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final at Roland Garros in his 12th major appearance. The three-time ATP World Tour Masters 1000 champion mounted comebacks from two-sets-to-one down in the second, third and fourth rounds.

9) Lopez Beats Federer: Feliciano Lopez owns an 0-13 FedEx ATP Head2Head record against fellow 36-year-old Federer, but he is ensured a moral victory over the living legend at Wimbledon. When he faces Federico Delbonis, Lopez will break Federer’s all-time record by playing in his 66th straight Grand Slam main draw.

10) Doubles Encore: The Top 2 seeds in doubles are Oliver Marach/Mate Pavic and Lukasz Kubot/Marcelo Melo, who could meet in the Wimbledon final for the second straight year. In 2017, Kubot and Melo defeated Marach and Pavic 13-11 in the fifth set after four hours and 39 minutes.

Gonzalez/Demoliner Clinch Maiden Team Triumph In Antalya

Marcelo Demoliner and Santiago Gonzalez failed to convert two championship points in the second set of the Turkish Airlines Open Antalya final. But the Brazilian-Mexican duo recovered from the disappointment to beat Dutchmen Sander Arends and Matwe Middelkoop 7-5, 6-7(6), 10-8 to lift the trophy on Friday.

Demoliner and Gonzalez, who were 2-4 as a pair before the week, claim their maiden title as a team. It’s an especially notable victory for Demoliner, as the 29-year-old fell in his first six tour-level finals.

“It’s a very special moment. It was a great match, a tough one,” Demoliner said. “We had one match point in the second set [on which] I missed a very easy smash. I was a little bit nervous. I’m very happy for my first title. Also playing with this guy, he’s a great guy. It’s very nice to play with him. He brings a great energy on the court with me. So I’m very happy to get the title.”

Demoliner/Gonzalez could have lost the plot in the Match Tie-break, but three mini-breaks carried the team to victory.

“We stayed strong. We are very happy to win our first team title,” said Gonzalez, who now owns 12 tour-level trophies.. “Especially for Demo, this is his first ATP title, so I’m very happy for him.”

The unseeded duo earns 250 ATP Doubles Rankings points and a share of €23,090. The Dutchmen, Arends and Middelkoop, fell just short of their maiden team victory. But they add 150 points and a split of €12,140 for their efforts.

Lacko Reaches Eastbourne Final

Slovakia’s Lukas Lacko advanced to his first ATP World Tour final for close to six-and-a-half years on Friday with victory at the Nature Valley International. Lacko, who has grown in confidence since he recorded the biggest win of his career over World No. 11 Diego Schwartzman in the second round, came through 6-3, 6-4 against fourth-seeded Italian Marco Cecchinato.

The 30-year-old Lacko lost just seven of his service points and struck nine aces for victory in 59 minutes at Devonshire Park in Eastbourne. Now 7-7 in tour-level matches this season, he has also captured his 12th ATP Challenger Tour crown in Glasgow (d. Vanni). Cecchinato, the Gazprom Hungarian Open titlist (d. Millman) and the Roland Garros semi-finalist, is 15-11 in 2018.

Lacko, who lost to Mikhail Youzhny in the Zagreb final of 2012, will next challenge Germany’s Mischa Zverev or Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan. Lacko has a 1-0 lead in his FedEx ATP Head2Head series against Zverev (Halle in 2017) and has yet to met Kukushkin.

Bambridge/O'Mara Complete Dream Week In Eastbourne

Wild cards Luke Bambridge and Jonny O’Mara held their nerve to win an all-British final on Friday for their first ATP World Tour doubles title at the Nature Valley International. Three weeks on form beating the Skupski brothers at the Surbiton Trophy, for their first ATP Challenger Tour trophy, Bambridge and O’Mara won 7-5, 6-4 in 71 minutes.

Bambridge and O’Mara recovered from 2-5 down in the first set of the Eastbourne final, saving four set points from 0/40 at 3-5. They then broke in the seventh game of the second set. It was the first all-British tour-level doubles final since 2012, when Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins beat Jamie Delgado and Ken Skupski at Devonshire Park on the south coast of England.

Bambridge and O’Mara, who beat top seeds and Roland Garros champions Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah in the quarter-finals, were competing in their first ATP World Tour tournament this week. The Skupskis drop to 11-5 on the year, which includes their first tour-level title at the Open Sud de France (d. McLachlan/Nys).

The victors earned 250 ATP Doubles Rankings points and share €35,830 in prize money, while the Skupskis head to London with 150 points and €18,830.

Wimbledon Draw Insider Analysis: Serena emerges as big winner

Dzumhur Beats Vesely For Antalya Final Spot

Damir Dzumhur advanced to his fourth ATP World Tour final (2-1) on Friday with victory at the Turkish Airlines Open Antalya.

The second seed from Bosnia and Herzegovina saved two set points in the second set to beat the Czech Republic’s Jiri Vesely 6-3, 7-6(1) in 80 minutes. It was his fourth straight win — at ATP World Tour and ATP Challenger Tour levels — over Vesely.

Dzumhur will next face a Frenchman in top seed Adrian Mannarino or fourth seed Gael Monfils. Dzumhur trails Mannarino 0-1 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series, while he has not met Monfils.

The 26-year-old Dzumhur saved two set points at 4-5, 15/40 in the second set, prior to winning the first four points of the tie-break. Dzumhur struck a forehand down the line, which Vesely volleyed into the net on match point.

Dzumhur, who is two spots off his career-high of No. 28 in the ATP Rankings (first attained on 11 June this year), won two titles in 2017 at the St. Petersburg Open (d. Fognini) and the VTB Kremlin Cup (d. Berankis). The 26-year-old from Bosnia and Herzegovina also finished runner-up at the Winston-Salem Open (l. to Bautista Agut).

Sabalenka ousts Radwanska to reach Eastbourne final

Five Must-See First-Round Matches At Wimbledon

If you thought you could settle gently into 13 days of action at The Championships, think again. There are plenty of must-see clashes in the first round.

[ALSO LIKE]

Stan Wawrinka (SUI) vs. [6] Grigor Dimitrov (BUL)
Take a deep breath. Neither sixth seed Grigor Dimitrov or Stan Wawrinka would have hoped for such a draw, but with Wawrinka outside of the Top 200 in the ATP Rankings the prospect of meeting a seed was always on the cards.

Back in London, the scene of his Wimbledon semi-final run in 2014 and last year’s Nitto ATP Finals crown, Dimitrov is looking for an injection of confidence and has a 4-2 lead in his FedEx ATP Head2Head series against Wawrinka.

The Bulgarian, who has won their past four meetings, beat Wawrinka on grass-courts the semi-finals of the 2014 Fever-Tree Championships 6-2, 6-4. Dimitrov has a 19-12 record on the 2018 season.

Wawrinka, who has been training well on the practice courts, believes that it’s only a matter of time before he produces his best tennis on a match court. It makes the 2014 and 2015 quarter-finalist at Wimbledon dangerous, following two left knee surgeries last year.

[23] Richard Gasquet (FRA) vs. Gael Monfils (FRA)
Two of France’s most talented players of the past 15 years square off for the 17th time (Monfils 9-7), having split their past two grass-court matches. Gasquet won their 2017 Gerry Weber Open first-round encounter 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, but Monfils won last year’s Nature Valley International semi-final 6-2, 6-7(7), 7-6(4).

Gasquet certainly has the pedigree to win, with two semi-final exits at Wimbledon in 2007 and 2015, in addition to a 3-1 record in grass-court finals. But while Monfils has never gone past the third round in nine appearances at The Championships, the 31-year-old is capable of brilliance. Monfils will play with confidence having advanced to the Turkish Airlines Open Antalya semi-finals this week.

[16] Borna Coric (CRO) vs. Daniil Medvedev (RUS)
Only a handful of players have beaten Roger Federer, the eight-time Wimbledon champion, on grass. Borna Coric beat the Swiss last week to capture his second ATP World Tour trophy at the Gerry Weber Open.

The 21-year-old Coric won his lone FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting against Medvedev in the round-robin stage of the 2017 Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan, on indoor hard courts.

Coric, who is currently at a career-high No. 21 in the ATP Rankings, will be wary though of 22-year-old Medvedev, who knocked out Wawrinka in the Wimbledon first round last year.

Jeremy Chardy (FRA) vs. [26] Denis Shapovalov (CAN)
What price do you put on confidence against a shot-maker? We’ll soon find out in a first-time match-up on the hallowed lawns.

Jeremy Chardy, who recently moved to London, has enjoyed a solid run of form in recent weeks, which has seen him move up from No. 86 to No. 46 in the ATP Rankings, his highest ranking since 8 August 2016 (No. 39). On the back of a sixth ATP Challenger Tour trophy at the Surbiton Trophy (d. de Minaur) and a run to the Libema Open title match (l. to Gasquet), the Frenchman moved into the Fever-Tree Championships semi-finals (l. to Djokovic) last week.

Shapovalov may only have a 3-5 lifetime record on grass courts, but the #NextGenATP Canadian has shown over the past 12 months how, with discipline, he can control his powerful baseline game. Under the guidance of Daniel Nestor, the former doubles World No. 1, last week, the 19-year-old is also building his confidence on approach to the net.

[7] Dominic Thiem (AUT) vs. Marcos Baghdatis (CYP)
In another first-time clash, Thiem – more accustomed to peak performances on clay courts – challenges a player with experience at Wimbledon. Baghdatis may be riding a six-match tour-level losing streak, but at the All England Club the 33-year-old Cypriot has reached the 2006 semi-finals and 2007 quarter-finals.

Thiem heads to Wimbledon with one grass-court win this year – over Mikhail Youzhny in the Halle first round last week – but like Baghdatis, the Austrian has reached one grass-court final at the 2016 MercedesCup (l. to Kohlschreiber). Baghdatis, the 2007 Halle runner-up, lost in the Antalya first round this week (l. to Kavcic).

Federer, Cilic In Same Half At Wimbledon; Nadal In Loaded Bottom Section

Defending champion Roger Federer has been drawn in the same half of The Championships draw as Marin Cilic, the player he beat in last year’s Wimbledon final. Three-time former champion Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, the 2013 and 2016 titlist, are in the bottom of the 128-man Wimbledon draw with World No. 1 Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro.

The draw ceremony, held at the All England Club on Friday morning, has also thrown out intriguing first-round matches, including 2014 and 2015 quarter-finalist Stan Wawrinka against sixth seed Grigor Dimitrov, the 2014 semi-finalist, and an all-French clash between Gael Monfils and two-time former semi-finalist Richard Gasquet. Borna Coric, who beat Federer in last week’s Gerry Weber Open final, will face fellow NextGenATP Daniil Medvedev in the opening round.
