Poland Eliminates Austria From The ATP Cup

Hubert Hurkacz levelled his match with World No. 4 Dominic Thiem in Sydney at 3-6, 6-4. By winning the second set, the Polish No. 1 eliminated Austria from contention for the Final Eight at the ATP Cup.

Entering the match, Austria still had a chance to win Group E after losing the first match of the country's tie against Poland. However, the Austrians needed to win 2-1, without losing another set, and Argentina had to beat Croatia 3-0 and 6-0 in sets. Austria cannot qualify as one of the top two second-placed teams anymore. The Final Eight begins on Thursday in Sydney at  Ken Rosewall Arena.

Hurkacz, who is 2-0 so far at No. 1 singles this ATP Cup, is trying to maintain his perfect record against the 2019 Nitto ATP Finals runner-up. The Pole could clinch the tie for his country, and he owns a 1-0 ATP Head2Head record against the Austrian. Hurkacz defeated Thiem 6-4, 6-4 in Miami last year.

In the day's first match, Kacper Zuk became the lowest-ranked singles player to win a match at the inaugural ATP Cup on Wednesday, as the World No. 448 rallied past Dennis Novak 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-3 to give Poland a 1-0 lead over Austria.

Zuk battled hard against former World No. 3 Marin Cilic on Monday, pushing the Croat to a tie-break in the first set. But while he did not get through that match, he wouldn’t be denied again.

The #NextGenATP player saved nine of the 13 break points he faced to triumph after two hours and 33 minutes. The Pole showed no nerves as he served out the match, attacking the Austrian relentlessly with his forehand on match point until Novak shoveled a backhand passing shot wide.
