Sinner Withdraws, Sending Kyrgios Into Indian Wells QFs

Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the BNP Paribas Open due to illness, sending Nick Kyrgios into the quarter-finals at Indian Wells.

Kyrgios also advanced to the last eight in the California desert in 2017 after he upset Novak Djokovic, but withdrew before his match against Roger Federer due to illness. The Australian will play fourth seed Rafael Nadal or 17th seed Reilly Opelka next.

Kyrgios is competing in his second tournament of the season after making the second round in singles at the Australian Open, where he lifted the doubles trophy with close friend Thanasi Kokkinakis.

So far in Indian Wells, the 26-year-old has defeated 2021 Intesa Sanpaolo Next Gen ATP Finals competitor Sebastian Baez, 32nd seed Federico Delbonis and eighth seed Casper Ruud without losing a set. Kyrgios has not lost serve, saving all nine break points he has faced.

In the two singles matches Sinner played at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, he eliminated Serbian Laslo Djere and Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi.
