Hurkacz Defeats Bublik At Wimbledon To Record Best Grand Slam Performance

Hubert Hurkacz reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time on Saturday as he overcame Alexander Bublik 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in 87 minutes at Wimbledon.

The 14th seed has not dropped a set this week at SW19 and hit 33 winners, breaking Bublik four times to advance. He will next face second-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev or former World No. 3 and Wimbledon 2017 finalist Marin Cilic.

Hurkacz became Poland's first ATP Masters 1000 champion when he won the Miami Open presented by Itau (d. Sinner) in March. The 24-year-old reached the third round at Wimbledon in 2019 (l. to Djokovic).

In a rain-interrupted clash, Hurkacz found the decisive break when play resumed in the sixth game as Bublik pushed a backhand wide. Hurkacz fired four aces in the set to move ahead and continued to dictate play in the second set, dealing with Bublik’s variety of shots to impose his aggressive game. He won 92 per cent (11/12) of his first-service points in the final set, sealing the win when Bublik hit a backhand long.

Bublik, who enjoyed a run to the quarter-finals at the Viking International Eastbourne last week, has reached the final of the Antalya Open in Turkey (l. to De Minaur) and the Singapore Tennis Open (l. to Popyrin) this year.
