Germany Eyes Russia SF Challenge; Zverev: 'We Want To Win' ATP Cup

Alexander Zverev already has his sights set on the ATP Cup semi-finals, where Germany play Russia – boasting Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev – on Saturday in Melbourne.

Speaking after a 2-1 group stage victory over defending champion Serbia, the World No. 7 said: “We want to do well. We want to win. We’ve probably got the toughest team [Russia] left in the draw ahead of us, with two Top 10 singles guys. We’ve got to perform at our best to give ourselves the chance tomorrow.”

Captain Mischa Zverev said, “They are obviously a great team.... But we too are also in good shape, so [it's] going to be [a] very interesting, intense match and I hope we can beat them.”

Jan-Lennard Struff got Germany off to a strong start on Friday by beating Dusan Lajovic of Serbia 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the Group A tie, then Novak Djokovic edged past Zverev 6-7(3), 6-2, 7-5 in the second singles match. Struff and Zverev then combined to beat Nikola Cacic and Djokovic 7-6(4), 5-7, 10-7 in the deciding doubles match at Melbourne Park.

“I think we played maybe a little bit more aggressively,” said Alexander Zverev, when asked about the decisive doubles victory. “In the end, we maybe took a few more shots, but it was so tight it could have gone both ways. At the end of the day when you win the doubles decider 10-7 in the third set there's not much between the two. So we're just super happy right now.”

Mischa Zverev added, “[I’m] very proud, all the matches were very tight and close, and the third set doubles was incredible because they really performed. They were brave. They performed incredibly well.”

Germany finished Group A with a perfect 2-0 record, having beaten Canada 2-1 on Wednesday.
