Carreno Busta Claims Early Victory For Spain

Pablo Carreno Busta earned Spain an early 1-0 lead in its tie against Australia on Tuesday, as he moved past John Millman 6-2, 6-4.

The Spanish No. 3 dropped just three points behind his first serve (25/28) to claim his fourth win in five ATP Head2Head clashes against Millman after 77 minutes. Carreno Busta was originally scheduled to play only in doubles but, following Rafael Nadal's decision to miss the tie due to a stiff back, the Gijon native was also added to the No. 2 singles position.

“Obviously it's very important to us to win the first match… Rafa couldn't play, so I am here to try to help my team,” said Carreno Busta. “Obviously the first match of the season is always difficult, but I think that I played really a good match, feeling very comfortable on court, so [I am] happy for the victory. Of course now, [we need to] continue fighting, because they play at home and they're a really good team.”

Spain is aiming to defeat Australia for the second straight year at the ATP Cup. At the inaugural edition of the event last year, Spain claimed a 3-0 semi-final victory against the host nation to reach the championship match.

In the second singles match, Roberto Bautista Agut will attempt to clinch the tie for his nation against Alex de Minaur. The Spaniard is seeking his first win against De Minaur, after losing to the Aussie in straight sets at the Zhuhai Championships and the Rolex Paris Masters in 2019.
