Mektic/Krejcikova Win Australian Open Mixed Doubles Title

Nikola Mektic and Barbora Krejcikova made a perfect team debut at the Australian Open, clinching the mixed doubles title on Saturday with a 5-7, 6-4, 10-1 victory against Jamie Murray and Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

"I think we understood each other from the beginning. We adjusted well for our game," Mektic said. "Barbora is really nice person. The energy was very nice. We had no problems in communication. That was also I think the key."

Mektic and Krejcikova let slip a 4-2 lead in the first set against the two-time defending US Open champions. But they remained calm, hitting 28 winners in the match to emerge victorious after one hour and 25 minutes.

The titlists won the final eight points of the championship, sealing their victory on their first match point when Mektic hit a forehand passing shot down the line that Mattek-Sands could not handle. This is Krejcikova's second consecutive Australian Open title after triumphing with Rajeev Ram last year.

"10-1, it's unbelievable when you see the score," Mektic said. "Definitely wasn't so easy. Every point was very stressful, obviously [in a Grand Slam] final. In the end, somehow we were much better [in the Match Tie-break]. Luckily we won 10-1."
