Bautista Agut Gets Team Spain Off To Strong Start

Roberto Bautista Agut got Team Spain off to a strong start on Monday at the ATP Cup in Perth. The World No. 10 blitzed past Franco Roncadelli of Team Uruguay 6-1, 6-2 in the first singles match of the Group B encounter at the RAC Arena.

Roncadelli, a replacement for Martin Cuevas, who strained his right hamstring in Saturday’s tie against Go Soeda of Japan, was understandably nervous, but got on the scoreboard in the third game with a hold to 15.

From there on, Bautista Agut, one of the ATP Tour’s most consistent performers, took control, hitting 11 winners during the 24-minute opener. The Spaniard saved one break point in the third game of the second set, but was broken by Roncadelli - who had never before played an ATP Challenger Tour event - in the seventh game.

Word No. 1 Rafael Nadal will now look to clinch the tie for Spain with victory over Pablo Cuevas in the second singles rubber.
