Near Perfect Tsitsipas Advances To Beijing Semi-finals

Stefanos Tsitsipas produced an impeccable performance on Friday at the China Open to beat American John Isner 7-6(3), 6-3 in 73 minutes for a place in the semi-finals. He will next play second-seeded German Alexander Zverev, who is looking to advance to the last four for the second time (2017), or Sam Querrey of the United States.

The third-seeded Greek dominated in the first-set tie-break, then opened up a 3-0 advantage in the second set en route to his 41st match win of the year. Tsitsipas. who won 91 per cent of his first-service points (39/43) and hit eight aces to Isner’s 81 per cent (35/43) and nine aces, struck 25 winners and committed just seven unforced errors.

It was Tsitsipas’ first win over Isner, who had won their two previous FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings at the 2017 Rolex Shanghai Masters and 2018 Wimbledon. Isner is now 1-12 against Top 10 opponents since beating Alexander Zverev for the 2018 Miami Open presented by Itau crown.

The 21-year-old Tsitsipas further strengthened his hold on sixth position in the 2019 ATP Race To London as he bids to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals for the first time. He currently has 3,250 points, which is 855 points ahead of seventh-placed Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut.
