Alexander Zverev had his doubts about his level before heading to Roland Garros. The German was a late arrival to Paris, after deciding to be the rare top player to compete the week before a Grand Slam. But he won the Banque Eric Sturdza Geneva Open, an ATP 250 event, on Saturday, and so far in Paris, (d. Jarry), all is going according to plan.
The fifth seed and 2018 quarter-finalist returned to the fourth round on Saturday, outdoing Serbian Dusan Lajovic 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 1-6, 6-2 to make back-to-back Round of 16s at Roland Garros.
The German looked to be cruising, up two sets to zero after 90 minutes. But the 27-year-old Lajovic, who made the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters final in April, rallied and won the third and sped through the fourth set, breaking a combined four times, to force a decider.
But Zverev improved to 7-5 on the year in deciding sets, according to his FedEx ATP Win/Loss Record, and won his second five-setter of the fortnight. He will face Italy's Fabio Fognini for a place in the quarter-finals.
The ninth seed beat 18th seed Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain 7-6(5), 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to become only the eighth Italian man to reach the Round of 16 on three or more occasions. Fognini achieved his best Grand Slam result here in 2011, making the quarter-finals (w/o to Djokovic).
