Wawrinka Breaks Madrid Streak; Medvedev Beaten

Former World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka broke a three-match losing streak at the Mutua Madrid Open on Tuesday with a confidence boosting 6-2, 6-3 win over French qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert on Tuesday in 65 minutes. Coming into the ATP Masters 1000 clay-court event, the Swiss, who had posted a 1-4 record in Madrid, since losing to Rafael Nadal in the 2013 final.

He will now play Argentine Guido Pella, the Brasil Open champion (d. Garin) in March, who held his nerve in a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 victory over No. 12 seed Daniil Medvedev, the 2019 ATP Tour match wins leader (25-9) and recent Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell runner-up (l. to Thiem). Pella also beat Medvedev 6-1, 6-7(4), 7-6(5) in May 2016 at Nice.
