Updates: Tsitsipas Leads Zverev In Madrid QF

Stefanos Tsitsipas is halfway to his second ATP Masters 1000 semi-final. Greece's #NextGenATP star broke in the 11th game and, after a hiccup, served out the first set 7-5 against defending champion Alexander Zverev on Friday at the Mutua Madrid Open.

Tsitsipas reached the Rogers Cup final in Toronto last August, beating Zverev in the quarter-finals after the German held two match points. The victory evened their FedEx ATP Head2Head series (1-1) after Zverev won at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C.

The third-seeded Zverev faced trouble early but erased four break points in his first two service games, and the two looked set for a tie-break. Tsitsipas, however, broke to love in the 11th game as his fans raised their Greek flags and shouted “Tsit-si-pas! Tsit-si-pas!”

The Greek broke down Zverev's forehand, which contributed seven of his 14 unforced errors in the opening set. The winner will meet Rafael Nadal or Stan Wawrinka, who contest their quarter-final later on Friday.
