World No. 1 Novak Djokovic opened his campaign for the third Mutua Madrid Open crown on Tuesday by beating American qualifier Taylor Fritz in an impressive 6-3, 6-2 victory over 65 minutes for a place in the third round. He’ll now prepare to face Diego Schwartzman, or Jeremy Chardy and qualifier Albert Ramos-Vinolas.
The 2011 and 2016 champion secured the first service break on Tuesday when Fritz made successive groundstroke errors at 3-3 in the first set, prior to saving a break point in the next game. Two of Djokovic’s six service points that he lost in the 38-minute opener came on double faults.
Djokovic, a winner of 13 tour-level clay-court titles, grew in confidence, losing just two service points in the second set with breaks of serve in the third and fifth games. Three weeks ago, Djokovic beat Fritz 6-3, 6-0 in the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters second round.
This week, Djokovic is celebrating becoming the fifth player in ATP Rankings history (since 1973) to have been No. 1 for 250 weeks or more. Now only Jimmy Connors (268), Ivan Lendl (270), Pete Sampras (286) and record-holder Roger Federer (310) have led men’s professional tennis for a greater number of weeks. Read More
