Cilic Waits On Djokovic Or Chardy In Madrid Quarter-finals

Ninth-seeded Croatian Marin Cilic booked his place in the Mutua Madrid Open quarter-finals with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 comeback victory over Laslo Djere of Serbia on Thursday.

Djere looked on course for a breakthrough run, but blinked after striking 15 winners at a set and 3-1 up. Cilic stepped up and won 11 of the last 13 games to complete his seventh match win of 2019 (7-6 record) in two hours and nine minutes. Djere, 23, recorded the second Top 10 win of his career in the second round with victory over Juan Martin del Potro.

Cilic will next play World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, the 2011 and 2016 champion, or France’s Jeremy Chardy on Friday.
