Opelka Soars To Career-High, Mover Of The Week

The 21-year-old American captured his first ATP Tour title at the New York Open, where he hit 156 aces, including 43 aces in his 6-1, 6-7(7), 7-6(7) victory over Brayden Schnur in the final. In the semi-finals, Opelka also defeated Top 10 star John Isner for the second time this year (2019 Australian Open). He rises 33 places to a career-high No. 56 in the ATP Rankings, having been No. 102 just six weeks ago. Twelve months ago he was No. 228 in the ATP Rankings (19 February 2018). The 32-year-old Frenchman is closing in on the Top 20 of the ATP Rankings for the first time since 24 July 2017 (No. 16) after lifting his eighth ATP Tour trophy with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 victory over Stan Wawrinka in the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament final on Sunday. The former World No. 3 grew in confidence during the ATP 500 tournament in Rotterdam, beating Benoit Paire, Milos Raonic, Denis Shapovalov and Kei Nishikori, before falling to Monfils in the final. With a 27-place rise, the 33-year-old Swiss is up to No. 41 in the ATP Rankings — his highest position since 28 May 2018 (No. 30). Having undergone two left knee surgeries in August 2017, Wawrinka was competing in his first tour-level final since June 2017 at Roland Garros (l. to Nadal).
