Borna Coric is halfway to springing in upset in China, leading top seed and defending champion Roger Federer 6-4 in the Rolex Shanghai Masters semi-finals.
The Croatian has come out of the gate firing in the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, standing in on the baseline and taking the action to Federer. Coric broke in the first game of the match and did not look back, winning 80 per cent of his service points en route to taking the opening set.
If Coric should win, he will advance to his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final. The last time he was in the semi-finals at this elite level, at this year's BNP Paribas Open, Coric fell short against Federer. But the 21-year-old bounced back by stunning the then-World No. 1 in the final of the Gerry Weber Open to claim the biggest title of his career. Federer leads the pair's FedEx ATP Head2Head series 2-1.
