Gojowczyk Forges Past Fognini, Into Geneva Final

Peter Gojowczyk's run of form in Geneva continues, as the World No. 49 defeated second seed Fabio Fognini 6-4, 6-4 to book his place in the final at the Banque Eric Sturdza Geneva Open on Friday. He'll face the winner between sixth seed Steve Johnson and Marton Fucsovics for the title.

Gojowczyk set the tone early, forcing Fognini to five deuces before the Italian managed to hold serve in the opening game of the match. The first break came six games later, when Gojowczyk broke at 40/15. The pair swapped consecutive breaks immediately before Gojowczyk held serve to clinch the first set.

The second set saw three straight service breaks prior to Gojowczyk holding serve in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead. The German held serve from that point forward and closed out the match in one hour and 33 minutes. Gojowczyk and Fognini are now 1-1 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series.

Gojowczyk is looking to cap off a stellar week in Geneva, where he has defeated Ivo Karlovic, David Ferrer, Andreas Seppi and Fognini. The 28-year-old German moves to 17-12 in 2018 and is aiming for his second career title (2017 Moselle Open).
