Bublik Earns Nur-Sultan SF Spot

Second seed Alexander Bublik continued his quest for his first tour-level title on Friday at the Astana Open as he marched past Spaniard Carlos Taberner 6-3, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals in Nur-Sultan.

The Kazakhstani, who overcame Miomir Kecmanovic in his opening match, produced a dominant display against Taberner in front of his home supporters. The 24-year-old mixed his powerful groundstrokes with great variety to manoeuvre the World No. 117 around the court to advance after one hour and 30 minutes.

“A couple of matches helped,” Bublik said. “I played doubles and singles yesterday. I served well and didn’t give up the chances I had. I was a bit lucky when he missed the overhead, but I am happy with the win and looking forward. I just want to come on court [against Kwon] and show my best.”

Bublik was competing in his seventh tour-level quarter-final of the season and has enjoyed a career-best year, earning 32 tour-level wins. The World No. 34 has reached finals in Antalya and Singapore and also advanced to last four in Newport.

The home favourite will next face Soonwoo Kwon after the World No. 82 upset seventh seed Laslo Djere 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-0 in two hours. It will be the South Korean’s second tour-level semi-final of the season after he reached the last four on grass in Eastbourne.
